Objetivo:
Las expresiones there is y there are en inglés se usan para señalar la existencia de un objeto, persona u animal que se encuentra en determinado lugar. Estas expresiones traducidas significan "hay". Y para usarlas correctamente se debe tener en cuenta el verbo to be.
Lectura corta:
AT THE SHOPPING CENTER
This is a shopping center. Its name is "ParkCity". There are three floors in this shopping center. 179th Avenue is behind it and beside it there is a parking lot.
The shopping center is between 84th and 85th street. There is policeman on the corner of 178th Avenue and 84th street. On the first floor, there are three restaurants. In front of the main entrance there are two banks and two cafeteries. A software store is beside restaurant #1. There's a post office 32. between restaurant #3 and bank. There's a tree among the benches and beside it there's a family. In front of this tree there is restaurant #2
On the second floor, there are clothing stores, grocery stores, shoe stores, and music stores #2 and #3. There is a grocery store in front of the shoe store #2. On the third floor there is a beautiful cinema and a big night club.
There is a video game room between fast food #1 and #2. There is a beauty parlor beside the cinema. The stairs are among the stores.

Las expresiones there is y there are se utilizan en inglés para indicar que un objeto o una persona se encuentran en un sitio especificado. La particularidad de estas estructuras consiste en que there no es el sujeto real del verbo to be, aunque lo preceda. El sujeto real del verbo se encuentra en la posición inmediatamente posterior.
There is
Se usa en singular para afirmar que sí existe o hay cierto objeto, animal o persona en el lugar del que se está hablando. Esta expresión puede usarse con el verbo to be en forma de contracción: There's.
Ejemplos:
There is a dog in the park - There's a dog in the park
There is an apple in the fridge - There's an apple in the fridge
(Hay un perro en el parque - Hay una manzana en la nevera)
En estos ejemplos además de usar el verbo to be (is) apropiadamente, también debemos utilizar los artículos a y an correctamente.
There isn't
Es la forma negativa para el singular, por lo tanto indica que no hay algo o alguien.
Ejemplos
There isn't a bank near my house.
There isn't a Spanish teacher in my school.
(No hay un banco cerca a mi casa - No hay un profesor de español en mi escuela)
Por eso sería incorrecto decir:
There is dogs in the park. (Dogs indica plural)
There isn't banks near my house. (Banks señala plural)
There are
Se usa en plural para indicar que sí hay o sí existe el sustantivo del que se está hablando. There are no puede usarse en forma de contracción: There're , porque no puede pronunciarse.

There are oranges in the fridge.
(Hay muchos libros en tu oficina - Hay naranjas en la nevera)
There aren't
Es la forma negativa cuando se habla en plural, indica que no hay o no existe el objeto, animal o persona del que se hace referencia.
Ejemplos
There aren't many students in that school
There aren't parking lots in this area
(No hay muchos estudiantes en esa escuela - No hay parqueaderos en esta área)
Forma interrogativa
Para formular preguntas usando there is y there are, hay que tener en cuenta si el sustantivo del que hablamos es singular o plural.
En singular preguntamos y respondemos así:
Is there a park near your school?
Yes, there is (there's)
No, there isn't
Is there an apple in the fridge?
Yes, there is (there's)
No, there isn't
